Mitchelton Wines, located on the banks of the Goulburn River in Nagambie, traces its roots back to 1836 when explorer Major Thomas Mitchell crossed the area on his journey from Sydney to Melbourne. The site was originally earmarked for a township called Mitchellstown. In the 1960s, Ross Shelmerdine, with the help of legendary winemaker Colin Preece, identified the region as an ideal location for premium grape growing. The first vines were planted in 1969, and the winery was named Mitchelton in tribute to the area’s early history. Now owned by the Ryan family since 2011, Mitchelton has grown into a leading Victorian wine estate. A luxury boutique hotel and Day Spa opened in 2018, adding to its appeal as a premium food, wine, and tourism destination. Mitchelton specialises in estate-grown Shiraz, Chardonnay, and Rhône-style blends. The wines are known for their clarity, structure, and ability to express the unique character of the site. The winemaking team takes a precise, hands-on approach in both vineyard and winery, combining traditional methods with innovation to bring out the best in each parcel of fruit. The vineyard’s proximity to the river, combined with diverse soil profiles and thriving native flora and fauna, contributes to a strong sense of place in every bottle. Mitchelton continues to build on its legacy with wines that are expressive, balanced, and built to age.
